When to buy the “-”

People will debate the subject of buying a domain without a “-” opposed to buying a domain with a “-” all day long. I say why debate … just buy both! It’s not the “-” that gets the search results. Everyone in this business is aware of all the factors that go into where you pop up on search results. I would bet that content and links trump the domain name.

Here’s where I see a huge benefit to having the domain with the “-” though. Let’s say that you have a New Jersey island based business that specializes in pens. And let’s say that someone told you to not buy a domain with a “-” in it. So you hop on GoDaddy and choose to buy “My Pen Island” .com. You launch your site and within weeks your business domain name becomes the brunt of all Facebook jokes.
Why?
Because when you put the words together in the URL it also reads www.MyPenisLand.com. I say research your name first and then buy all the domains that include your business name but use the one that makes the most since.
